Just Say NO to Bleach

This has been on my mind for awhile, so I thought today would be a great day to get the Bleach out of your Kitchen and maybe your house.

It’s easy, cheap, gets things white and kills bacteria, right?

Stop right there.  Has your nose ever burned from the smell?  Clue number ONE!

Bleach can cause

  • Respiratory Difficulties
  • Headaches
  • Vomiting

And this is just to name a few.  We are so focused on eating clean; shouldn’t we be aware of our environment as well?  I have been reading through some websites this morning (that have done their research) and all say bleach is not a necessary cleaner in your home.

Did you know that it is not even effective on organice matter?  (like the food on your cutting board) In order to kill off the bacteria,  your cutting board or counter top must be fully washed down, then dried and the bleach must sit for up to 2 minutes before it kills the bacteria.  Now some of you are thinking, ” I would never use bleach on  my countertops.”  Have you looked at what’s in the cleaner you are using?

Or what about that laundry.  Yes, I am guilty too–but it is stopping today!  Just the smell alone can cause headaches.  You have alternatives.  According to Kitchen Stewardship, White Vinegar or Baking Soda can be added to the laundry to get out the grime and they are not a toxin!

“So, no more bleachy sprays for my kitchen? What do I use?”

I love Mrs. Meyers products…they blend essential oils and vegetable proteins that cut the grime and leave your house smelling fresh.  You can find them in Whole Foods and even Target!  Check your local grocery store, as well.

Other options for DIY home cleaners:

  • Baking Soda
  • Borax
  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Lemons
  • Olive Oil

There are a million in one searches to do on Google to check out people’s success with DIY cleaners.  Don’t have the time?  Check out products that do not contain a “toxin” as a main ingredient.  It is worth it for you and your family to get the Bleach out of your Kitchen!

  1. I love your post! We use all natural house cleaners and I make our our laundry detergent. We have to take care of our skin, bodies and YES most importantly too, our home! :) Great tips!!

  2. Wow! great info. I’ve been thinking about cleaner’s lately and the chemical reside they leave behind.
I do use bleach A LOT, so this is a great eye opener.

One of my favorite topics!! I used to use Mrs. Meyers but I recently switched to Method. LOVE it!! I use the All-Purpose cleaner Clementine in the kitchen and the Lavender for the bathroom. They both clean very well and smell delightful. I also use the shower spray which smells sooooo good. It’s less expensive than Mrs. Meyers and Target has it on sale a lot. They also make a great Anti-Bacterial which I use as well.

Bleach isn’t just toxic in the home, but out of it too. Don’t forget about the impact these things have on our environment after they get flushed. Other good options – Target’s “Method”, Clorox’s “Greenworks” and Arm & Hammer has a line too. Check to see if the product is plant based and even if any environmental organization endorses – these are good clues. If you have a septic system, it is even more important to be cognizant of these things.

We, also, make our own concoction of laundry detergent and shampoos over here, in this house. I use bleach on some things, very rarely, but I suspect that will be past soon, as well.
