Choose Joy

Happy Monday Friends!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  I had a blast teaching a Zumba class with my teaching buddy Michelle.  She is 3 preggo weeks behind me, so we thought it would be fun to waddle across the floor together.  39 fantastic ladies showed up and danced their behinds off with us.  Thank you to all who came and thanks to Michelle for inviting me!

As I enter week 33, I have to tell you that my body is starting to hurt.  Back pain, bottom pain, leg pain…nothing serious, but just uncomfortable.  Shortness of breath is taking over, as I walk up 3 stairs, and sleep is a long lost friend.  These remaining 6 weeks seem to drag, BUT  the end result is pure joy.  (Dear family, please remind me of this as I voice my complaints more and more often).  As timing would have it, my husband sent me an article (not directed at me :) of course), on what people who choose happiness do differently.  I thought it was a great way to start the week and had to share it with you all.

This article comes from The Corporate Athlete Institute newsletter.  The following are highlights to inspire you this week.

  • Don’t hold grudges.
  • Treat everyone with kindness.
  • See problems as challenges.
  • Express gratitude for what they already have.
  • Dream big.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff.
  • Never make excuses.
  • Wake up at the same time every morning.
  • Avoid social comparison.
  • Choose friends wisely.
  • Never seek approval from others.
  • Take the time to listen.
  • Nurture social relationships.
  • Meditate.
  • Exercise.
  • Live minimally.
  • Tell the truth.
  • Establish personal control.
  • Accept what cannot be changed.

I love this inspiring list.  Don’t we all need a reminder that we need to CHOOSE joy even when life seems a little bumpy?  This week, I am going to focus on: not sweating the small stuff, avoiding comparison, and living minimally.

******What are several things, from this list, that you can focus on to improve your outlook on life?

Reebok Review- Dance Ur Lead Mid

As a Zumba instructor, I am always on the hunt shoes that are not only “hip” but also comfortable and functional.   Over the years I have tried many different brands and have yet to fall “in love.”  Guess what?  I am in love!

Last week, Reebok sent me their newest dance shoe, Dance UR Lead Mid.  I opened the box and was immediately ecstatic over the fashionable design! However, I have purchased plenty of stylish shoes and been seriously disappointed by the comfort level.  Reebok’s description was quickly reassuring that these shoes would not disappoint: “A sassy mid cut shoe that features 3D UltraLite tooling for lightweight cushioning as well as Pivot Point and Turn Zone for control in turns in spins. This shoe is perfect for any dance fitness exercise.”  I couldn’t wait to give these babies a try, in my Zumba classes.

Um yes, my kids thought I was the coolest thing ever walking out the door….

First thought when I put them on: LIGHT!  Seriously light, which makes “bouncing” a lot easier.  Other words coming to mind: flexible and supportive.  Love the flexibility as the shoe moved with my foot.  I definitely felt a moderate support underneath my arch, which is a MIRACLE for a dance shoe!!  On Saturday, I taught a double (2 classes) and my feet felt great.  This is especially important being 27 weeks preggo!  My favorite feature of the shoe is the ankle support.  When I get to moving in other shoes, I will stumble and feel my foot roll.  The mid rise kept my foot and ankle in place even as I “shook my groove thang” all morning.

Big thumbs up on this product!  HUGE score for Reebok and a HUGE score for me getting to try this fantastic shoe.  If you are a dance instructor or loyal dance participant, this will be a great investment.  Your feet will thank you (and you’ll be rocking some awesome kicks, too!)

And this is why I teach…

Yesterday, I received an (unsolicited) email from a friend who offered a Guest Post for Live Fit.  Never could I have imagined what this post would hold.  Honestly, she is why I teach.  Why I blog.  Please know, dear readers, you make the journey fun and worthwhile!

Thank you, dear Jill, for being the fun loving and inspiring person you are.  XO

About two and a half years ago, I was ready to give up on my workouts. I admit it: I’m lazy and easily bored. I had tried walking outside (boring), walking on a treadmill (boring), and lifting weights (SO boring).  I like to work out to music, but I used the same playlist over and over (lazy). My workouts were unfulfilling and sporadic, and predictably, I was lethargic, cranky, and-it almost goes without saying-overweight. I wanted to not hate working out, but how? I researched, read, and talked to fit people to try and find answers. I found fitness complicated and intimidating. I knew that there weren’t any shortcuts-but did not know where to begin. I was overwhelmed by the amount of information available and by the very wide gap between where I was and where I wanted to be. I shut down, retreated to a corner with my large order of fries, and hoped for either a miracle or a fitness fairy godmother.

Enter Godmother #1. Right around this time, my company hired an intern named Albert Rocker. Albert was in his senior year at Georgia Tech and played football, and I feel sure he never thought he’d be a fitness fairy godmother. Albert told me that he did a full workout in the morning, came to work in the office for eight hours, and then did another full workout after work. It blew my mind. He was never tired. If I did thirty minutes on the treadmill, I needed a nap and a day off. But Albert told me something interesting: he LIKED his workouts. I could not remember ever liking working out. Ever. I didn’t even know that was allowed. Fitness was hard! And boring! It was supposed to make you suffer! You can LIKE working out? It could not as simple as just doing something you like to do. Albert inspired me to think about fitness differently.

Enter Godmother #2. I walked into a Zumba class at my local Y on a Friday night. I chose Zumba using a very scientific-y method of, it sounded fun and that it was the class that was at 6:30. Cheryl Mosley was the instructor that night, and I feel sure she never thought she’d be a fitness fairy godmother. That class remains one of the hardest things I have ever done. I was so out of shape. I could not keep up. I was slow. I was clumsy. I stood in the back and tried be totally invisible. But, while I was stumbling around working very hard not to fall down, I observed something. Cheryl was nice. She was having fun. The other people in the class were having fun. PEOPLE WERE HAVING FUN EXERCISING. I wanted that! I wanted to have fun too! I limped home from that class with my very first fitness goal EVER: I was going to do three Zumba classes a week. It was a small goal, but a huge step.

It has been two and a half years since I walked into that Zumba class. I don’t really have a big, spectacular ‘Ta-da!’ moment that concludes this story. It’s more about how much better my life is because I exercise regularly. My fitness successes are small, but significant to me: being silly with my awesome Zumba friends during class; challenging my very fit sister-in-law to see who could do the most workouts in a month (I WON), or adding new kinds of exercise to my workout rotations. I used to worry that I was not the kind of girl who could maintain a fitness commitment-until recently. I was on a business trip with a few hours between the end of my work day and my flight home. Not long ago, I would have killed time hanging out in the hotel room flipping channels. Not anymore. I grabbed my workout clothes and hit the hotel fitness center. It was fun and I liked it.  I hope my fairy godmothers are proud

Launched!

In keeping with all things new, I took part in a NEW adventure today!  SeaCoast Fitness Club has a quarterly “launch” of all the Les Mill’s new programs, ie: BodyPump, BodyCombat and, BodyStep.  (I have been a part of launches in the past, but that was with Body Jam, my first teaching format.)  Because the club loves Zumba too, they also bring on a Zumba launch!  3 of the instructors were able to participate, so we each presented 5 shakin songs and had a blast!    Let me tell you that I felt nauseous before hand.  Why?  New crowd, don’t know a soul, new crowd, don’t know a soul…get the idea?  Thankfully, the instructors I taught with were awesome and the crowd was extremely welcoming.  Some even made mention of lovin the Georgia “accent.”

Here’a recap of the day in photos:

My old, but new favorite workout. Great weight class!

Guest Post Tuesday…Contemplating Exercise

The post this morning takes me back to my “home” town and to the love I have for my Zumba peeps.  It was such fun and so encouraging to watch a “newbie” step through the doors, scared to death, and leave empowered.  Some of you will read this and think, “well Zumba is not for me or at home workouts are not for me.”  You are missing the point–it’s about taking that first step and doing something for the good of you.  That can be walking, running, lifting weights, working out at home or venturing a new class.  A huge thanks to Miss Barbara Benson for this awesome, transparent, and inspiring post.

Contemplating Exercise

I have put a great deal of thought into exercising, literally months and months of thought and contemplation. I knew that I needed to exercise, after all, I was forty-nine years old, and if not now just when did I expect this to happen? So I visualized myself exercising, even purchased a 12-week Turbo Fire DVD set after being seduced by the info commercial on television. I mean you got to love infomercials! You can get so inspired while lying on your lazy ass, sort of the same way we all eat dessert while watching the Biggest Loser, but I digress. So the DVD’s gathered dust as I continued my visualization efforts all through the spring of 2011. Summer came and a girls trip to the beach, while my friends and I have the good taste not to photograph each other in our bathing suits, the weekend did produce many unfortunate pictures of my flabby arms. AAHH!!!! (I cannot scream that loud enough). What could be worse then flabby arms to go with my double chin? My time had clearly come.

In late June both of my children were at camp at the same time for one full week. No excuses, I had one week to myself with no one in the house but my kitty companions, this was it! I located and dusted off my Turbo Fire videos, marched down to the basement, and began working out six days a week. Let’s be clear, it was UGLY. One of the DVD’s was called the 55 EZ – indicating 55 minutes of easiness — NOT! My goal at this point was simply not to die. The set came with a 12-week calendar requiring me to exercise six days a week. I needed that calendar; it was the only thing holding me accountable. I figured that if I religiously followed the calendar that eventually I would come out of the fog and wake up 4-6 weeks later. Fortunately the DVDs came with the new to class option. This is where they break down the moves for the coordination/dance challenged people like myself. Honestly, I was too tired to remember the moves, even with the new to class help; I just liked the break in the work out. I mean damn, I was tired, real tired. But I muddled through; after all I still had the vague memory of the aerobics addiction I had in my late twenties. It was the best I ever felt about my body in my entire life. One of the few times I ever wore a bikini. I wanted to get back to that addicted state, and dare I say, to the bikini.

Time passed, four weeks to be exact, yea! I was actually starting to getting twinges of exercise addiction and see changes in my body such as actual indications of muscle mass. Unfortunately, weight wise, I was not losing as fast as I had hoped. While I was getting smaller, I was gaining muscle, which of course weighed more on the scale. I could tell I was getting muscle in my abdomen but it was hidden under a layer of fat and I really wanted that fat to go away.  Enter Zumba, several of my neighbors had caught the Zumba bug and were seeing some great results. So one hot Sunday afternoon I headed to my first Zumba class (with Cheryl, yea!) and what turned out to be one hour of dance fun. I really enjoyed it in spite of my total lack of coordination or the ability to follow dance moves and shake my booty (honestly, it just doesn’t shake in any attractive way whatsoever). But it was fun and I a great break from my very predictable DVD’s, where I had now memorized everything Chalene said. Now I have to admit, the Turbo Fire calendar was my friend, my rulebook, and I could not, not follow the calendar. After all, if left to my own devices, clearly, I would not exercise for another 20 years. So yes, I would go to Zumba three times a week and dutifully come home and Turbo Fire afterwards. But you know what, I always lost weight on Zumba days (you may now imagine the Halleluiah chorus). The weight started to move and people started to notice, and isn’t that what we all want? To be noticed, and to feel good about our bodies and ourselves. Hell yes it is! And better yet, I was developing muscles in my arms and could wear tank tops with much less embarrassment. Oh the joy in that!

Fast forward, six months. I have lost 15 – 20 pounds and I feel better than I have in a long time. I do not play the “new to class” version of my DVD’s and I actually know the moves, though it is still not a pretty sight. But alas, that is why I do it alone in the basement. I cannot tell a lie; I ate lots and lots and lots of sugar during the holidays and yes I put on some Christmas weight. I hit the end of my Turbo Fire Calendar during the fall and did a more modified approach of just trying to either Zumba or Turbo Fire six days a week. Without my calendar holding me accountable, I did not do as well. I am just one of those people that needs a routine. But good news, my kids are out of town with their Dad for the week, smile, and I am getting back into my groove. I am looking forward to Part II of my exercise journey. I figure if I can do a REPEAT of the last six months, I really will have on that bikini this summer! And the thing is, I know that I can do it, because I already did it once. It’s so easy to look at other people and get discouraged, to think that you can never lose the weight, get in shape, etc. But you can, because I did it, and if I did it, anyone can do it. So do it, its January, get a calendar and follow it. Don’t worry about how you look, or how tired you are, just take it a day at a time and one day it will be 4-weeks later and voila, you will be on your way.

New Schedule

Hey there…

Back from Nashville and getting into the swing of things.  Ready for summer exercise?  I have updated my schedule for the rest of May and June.  Also…take a look at the new Barre Sculpt class coming on Wednesday nights–6:30!  I love this class and love what it can do for your body–strengthen, tone, lengthen and LEAN up those muscles.  First person to comment on the blog will get a free Barre Class this summer.  (only comment if you want to attend a class:)  Please pass the word!

Fit Music for classes

Picking music for a Group Exercise class can be extremely challenging.  You want to play something current, but you hope that the members are not tired of it.  Everyone loves to shake their “tailfeathers, but you don’t want to offend.  Have you listened to popular music lately?  It is hard to find something not offensive in the lyrics.  So, here is the question–do you care what your instructor picks?  Let’s say this relates to zumba or to a cardio dance class.  Current?  Booty Music, current, oldies?  Do the lyrics matter?   Would love to hear your feedback!!

A Bit of FIT TV

Road Warrior Makes a Fit Trip!

What an exciting day! Yesterday, Fox 5 News (from Atlanta) sent their Road Warrior, Stacy Elgin, to film the Dance Studio where I teach Zumba. She did four segments highlighting: Zumba, Yoga, Barre Sculpt, and more Zumba! We had a great time showing what we do best. I feel blessed to work with wonderful instructors and having the support of amazing people–many who came at 8 AM to help us out!

Check out the four clips below:
